 The exclusive Luxury Trains in India tells a story of its own. These luxurious trains were a favourite medium of transport by the rulers. However, in 1947, Indian Railways decided to discontinue the service. But in 1981-82, the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation & the Indian Railways decided to launch a special heritage train for tourists, visiting Rajasthan. Powered by a steam engine, this Luxury tour in India made its maiden journey on 26th January 1982.
The Palace on Wheels has a total of 14 fully air-conditioned deluxe coaches, 2 restaurants cum kitchen cars, one bar cum lounge and 4 service cars. All of Luxurious Indian Train coaches have lavish interiors with beautiful paintings and comfortable furniture. Each coach has 4 twin-bedded cabins attached. The onboard facilities include bath & shower facility, H/C water supply, channel music, intercom, interesting games for children & wall-to-wall carpeting. The Satellite phone service is there for you to communicate anywhere. Moreover, a friendly and smiling attendant on each coach will cater all your travelling requirements.
The facilities are comparable to the best of the 5-star hotel. It has two well-maintained restaurants cum kitchen cars- the Maharaja and the Maharani- offering delicious and mouth-watering cuisine.
The train has a 24 hr well-maintained bar to take care of your drinking pleasures.
The Palace on Wheels also boasts a beautiful gift shop called 'The Bazaar' so that you can purchase exotic handicrafts and gift items. A separate beautiful lounge car is attached giving peaceful ambience to passengers.
This luxurious train starts its royal journey on every Wednesday from Delhi Cantonment Railway Station during the cooler months of September to April. However, the train doesn't operate from May to August.
